Collin Cargill selected to the NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The pre-season honors continue to roll in for Golden Eagle closer Collin Cargill. Just one day after earning preseason All-Conference USA, he was selected today to the National College Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year watch list.

He was also selected a pre-season All-American last month by the NCBWA.

The Stopper of the Year award is given annually to the nation’s top reliever by the NCBWA.

Cargill, a redshirt junior, emerged in his sophomore campaign as the Golden Eagle closer and recorded a C-USA leading 13 saves. He was 4-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 28 appearances.

He recorded his biggest saves of the season in the NCAA post season saving both wins over No. 13 Georgia Tech in the NCAA Atlanta Regional and both games over No. 9 Florida in the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional, allowing just one run and four hits in those four games.

He is one of four C-USA pitchers on this year’s watch list along with East Carolina junior right-hander Seth Simmons, Houston junior right-hander Chase Dempsay and Tulane junior right-hander Nick Pepitone.

In 2008, Southern Miss closer Tyler Conn was one of the five finalist for the Stopper of the Year Award.

Cargill and the No. 21 ranked Golden Eagles open their 2010 season on Feb. 19 vs. Northwestern State at Pete Taylor Park.
